Secret Family Chocolate Cake Recipe Revealed?
My mom’s family has a chocolate cake recipe that has been shared through 4 generations now. My Grandma O’Neil gave this recipe to her daughters and her daughters have shared with their daughters. My own mother is VERY protective of this recipe. It is usually made for birthdays and other family gatherings, and my mom has never shared this recipe outside of her own daughters. She has not shared it with her sister-in-laws, best friends, or any other family member. If you ask her if you can share it, she becomes like a mother hen, her feathers get all ruffled up and you quickly understand that this is not to be shared! She feels that it will somehow lose its magic if too many people make it.
I even had to text her this morning and get her approval to share my version of this amazing chocolate cake recipe. I cannot reveal the original but I have made some adaptions over the years and I feel that because I have changed at least 3 things, that the recipe is now mine to share!
I have made this cake two times in the past 2 weeks for my son’s birthday. Today I had to double the recipe (which is actually quadrupled from the original). It turned out great and was nice to have a giant homemade cake to serve 25+ people. I actually contemplated buying a store-made cake from Costco, but just couldn’t bring myself to do it! I have made this recipe so many times, I could probably do it in my sleep. He loved the Pokebowl I added to it and was in heaven. Huge mom score!
Hot Water Chocolate Cake (adapted from my mom’s secret family recipe) makes enough for 24 cupcakes, (1) 13×9″ pan, (2) round cakes for a layer cake, or (1) bundt cake
- 1 cup organic extra virgin coconut oil
- 2 cups sugar
- 4 eggs
- 2 tsp baking soda
- 4 heaping TBSPs of unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 cups all-purpose, unbleached flour
- 2/3 cup fat-free greek yogurt
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tsp sea salt
- 1 cup boiling water
Grease and flour your desired pan. Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
Cream coconut oil, sugar, and eggs together. Mix dry ingredients in a separate bowl. Add half of the dry ingredients to the creamed sugar mixture. Mix well. Add 1/3 cup of the greek yogurt and mix well. Add remaining dry ingredients, mix well and then the final 1/3 cup of yogurt, mix well. Heat water to boiling, then slowly add to batter, stirring slowly, then add vanilla.
Pour batter into desired pan. I really love this cake in a traditional 13×9 or bundt pan, and it makes great layered cakes.
Bake in the oven for 35-40 mins. The cake should bounce back when gently pressed, and a toothpick inserted into the middle comes out clean.
Let cool completely before icing. I love a simple vanilla buttercream on this cake or if using a bundt pan, a simple sprinkle of powdered sugar is all it needs!
There you have it. No need to go searching on Pinterest for the best chocolate cake recipe. I have solved all of your problems, please give credit when credit is due!
Love, peace, and happiness to all of you that make this life changing cake.
